Nursery Admissions

For details of the nursery admission criteria set out by High Bank JIN School, please see our Admissions Policy.

All 3 and 4-year-old children are entitled to 15 hours of free early education.

Eligibility for the additional 15 hours

The government has set the following eligibility criteria:

  • Both parents must be working - or the sole parent is working in a lone-parent family.
  • Each parent earns, on average, a weekly minimum equivalent to 16 hours at national minimum wage or national living wage.
  • Each parent must have an annual income of less than £100,000

More detailed information can be found on the GOV.UK website.

How to Apply for Funded Hours

Parents can apply online via HMRC. HMRC will have a dedicated help desk to support parents applying if they are unable to apply online and school may also be able to help you with your application.

Eligible parents will be given a code which will be valid for 3 months. Parents will be asked to re-confirm their eligibility towards the end of the 3-month period. HMRC will send reminders to parents.

N.B. The offer of a place in our nursery is not a guarantee of a place in school, and your child must be registered separately for admission to Reception via Kirklees Pupil Admissions.

Registration forms for admission to nursery are available from the school office. Please be aware that we will need to see your child's birth certificate at the time of registration.

School Admissions

Applying for a Primary School Place

Children can start Reception year, also known as Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), at primary school from the September after their fourth birthday. Each year the round of applications opens on 1st September and closes on 15th January the following year. All applications for a school place must be made online via the Kirklees website. Please click on the link for further information: Applying for a Primary School Place

The Admission Criteria states:

  1. Children in public care (looked after children) and all previously looked after children, including those children who appear (to the admission authority) to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be as a result of being adopted.
  2. Children who live in the school’s Priority Admission Area (PAA) who have a brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission (the sibling rule).
  3. Children who live in the school’s PAA.
  4. Children who live outside the school’s PAA who have a brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission (the sibling rule)
  5. Children who live outside the school’s PAA.

Community and voluntary controlled schools will admit a child with special educational needs and/or disabilities when the school is named on the Education Health and Care Plan. Click the link below to read the full Admissions Policy for further information or contact Kirklees Pupil Admissions directly on 01484 225007. Alternatively, speak to a member of staff in the school office.

In-Year School Admissions

An in-year admission is when a child already attends a school but wants to transfer to another school outside the usual transfer time, for example, because the child is moving to a new address. These transfers take place during the school year, which is why they are called in-year admissions. There are two different types of in-year admission:

  • Parents or carers who are moving/have moved house and wish to move to a school closer to their new home.
  • Parents or carers who are not moving house, or whose change of address is not a significant one (a significant house move is defined as over 2 miles for Key Stage 1 or 3 miles for Key Stage 2 and above), but would like their child to change school.

You may apply at any time during the school year, but no earlier than one school term in advance of when the school place is required. A child usually starts at a new school at the beginning of a term unless their home address has changed significantly, or they are new to Kirklees. Please indicate on the online form if this is the case. All applications for a school place are processed by Kirklees Pupil Admissions

Moving on to Secondary School

If you live in Kirklees, please follow the application process on the Kirklees website. Still use this even if your preferred school is outside of Kirklees. You still need to apply for a place at a secondary school even if your child has siblings at the secondary school. Each year the round of applications opens on 1st September and closes on 31st October of the same year.

You should note three preferences on your application form. This is to ensure your child is allocated a secondary school place at a school of your choosing, if your first choice is over subscribed. If you do not make an application by the deadline, your child will be added to the waiting list and offered a school of the LA's choosing, where places are available.
